| Tetrapylon in Aphrodisias
Under the protection of the patron goddess Aphrodite, and the mighty Roman Empire, Aphrodisias experienced her "golden age" during the second century CE, under the Emperor Trajan. The city itself was conceived as a work of art resulting in a carefully planned, aesthetic group of buildings featuring marvelous architecture and propylaea (monumental gateways). One of the most attractive landmarks of Aphrodisias is a decorative gateway known as the Tetrapylon (Tetra, meaning four, pylon, meaning gateway). It consists of four rows of four columns. The pediment over the west columns is decorated with reliefs of Erotes and Nikes hunting among scrolls of acanthus leaves. The restoration of the Tetrapylon was completed in the early 1990s. |
