| The Traian Column (or Pillar) "is" a spiral that turns 23 times along the pillar`s frame. It is 40 metres high and was erected in 113 A.D. by the Emperor Traian to celebrate his wars against the Dacians, wich were the ancestors of Romanians. The Dacians are very often represented on the Pillar, therefore it`s an important atraction for us, Romanians.
The Pillar has 45 small windows are lighting the inside where is a spiral staircase not accesible to the public. On the top, there was a statue of Traian but in 1587, Pope Sixtus V replaced it with one representing St. Peter. |
