| On northside of the Piazza del Popolo stands the Porta del Popolo originally Porta Flaminia, part of the Aurelian Walls. The present look of Porta del Popolo was designed by Bernini in 1655.
On the right, there is the ancient church of Santa Maria del Popolo. Started as a chapel in 1099, it became a church in the 13th century. Inside, one can find masterpieces by Caravaggio, Bernini and the Chigi Chapel, designed by Raphael. Unfortunately, at the present time, it is closed for restauration. On the left, although similar, the building is only a Carabinieri station. |
