| Santa Maria degli Angeli e dei Martiri was designed by Michelangelo in 1563, as a result of an Sicilian priest having a vision of angels in the ruins of the Baths of Diocletian. Michelangelo died a year later, so the work was completed by one of his pupils, Jacopo Lo Duca.
The basilica was built inside the Roman walls of the Baths of Diocletian, but the 16th century facade was demolished in the 20th century, in order to expose the original walls of the Baths. One can find it in the Piazza della Republica. |
