At the center of St. Peter Square stands an Egyptian obelisk of red granite, 25.5 meters tall. The 13th century BC obelisk was moved to Rome in 37 AD by the Emperor Caligula to stand in the central side of the Circus Gai et Neronis, which layed to the left of the present St. Peter basilica. It was moved to its current location in 1586 by Domenico Fontana under the direction of Pope Sixtus V. A relic of the True Cross is kept on its summit.
On the right of the picture, close to a man with a red jacket, you can see the spot called "Centro del Colonnato"( white with black center), from wich, the four actual rows of columns seem to be only one, because only the first row is visible. On the left side, there is the other "Centro del Colonnato".
The photo was shot from the top of the basilica, a very windy place, actually...
