Approximately 1-km-long city walls besieging the Basilica of St.John have two sections as internal and external city walls.External city walls were supported by 20 towers and the reused materials, brought from Ephesus and Temple of Artemis, were used as consrtuction materials on the gates. The city walls have three main entrances in the east, west and south. The main, called `Gate of Persecution`.in the south has remained to be the most intact entrance among the entrances.
