| Standing up to 83,7 meters in the park with the same name, the Orthodox Cathedral is the talest building in my city. It`s history is not so long, as it was buid between 1936 and 1940 by the romanian architect Ion Traianescu. But, as WWII begun, the interior paintings were completed only in 1956.
The general style of the Cathedral is unusual for it`s size, combining the romanian religious tradition with the byzantine style. The Cathedral has 11 towers and 7 bells wich were made with metal brought from Sumatra, Indonezia. The bells total weight is 8 tones and are harmonized to sing a specific melody. Due to WWII, the Cathedral was inaugurated only in 1946, in the presence of King Mihai I and it`s now the best known building and a symbol of Timisoara. |
